The City of Long Beach City Council elected Long Beach Councilmember Rex Richardson as Vice Mayor for the second time since he was elected in 2014. The council selected him in a 5-4 vote at a Council Meeting on Tuesday December 15.
“My commitment as Vice Mayor is to work to bring all factions of our city together as we build a stronger, more resilient, and more equitable future for Long Beach. ” the Councilmember said in an eblast letter released by his office. “In 2021, let’s defeat this crisis together, begin the arduous work of restoring our economy, supporting our front line workers and small businesses, get our kids back to school, turning a corner on racial equity, while demonstrating compassion and love for all humankind.” Richardson steps into the seat left vacant by longtime councilmember Vice Mayor Dee Andrews who lost his seat to Suely Saro in a historic demographic electoral shift.
Pundits are speculating that this election is especially important these days as Mayor Robert Garcia’s name is being bantied about as one who will be tapped to some sort of key role in the new Biden/Harris Administration. Should that scenario play out, then Mr. Richardson will be the Mayor.
For us, its all speculation but for now, Congratulations to the Honorable Rex Richardson, Vice Mayor of the City of Long Beach.
